The Royal Borough Of Greenwich were already indexed as a smart city in 2017. This was in recognition to several advanced transport innovation projects. This was all led by the Digital Greenwich Team.
Now taking their smart city a step further they have invested in digitising their gully’s. Once complete this will allow them to make strategic desktop decisions allowing them to maximise their budget.
Royal Borough of Greenwich select KaarbonTech gully software for inventory collection
The Royal Borough of Greenwich have chosen Kaarbontech to be the partner on this project. KaarbonTech’s own surveyors will be using our Gully Smart software to collect the data. The contract is to survey 485km of highways across Greenwich.
The inventory collection will include condition and silt levels for all gullies found and extend to the collection of Aco and kerb drain’s. Starting in January 2019, the contract is expected to run for 12 weeks.
The Completion Of The Greenwich Project
In 6 weeks, we surveyed over 20,000 gullies along with kerb drainage for the council. The data will now be used to keep their drainage data up-to-date. They were very pleased with the quality of survey data and the speed of the survey.
The survey went that well the it was completed in half the time originally estimated. Now all the gully data has been digitised it will enable the Greenwich Council to make better informed decisions on where to send the gully cleaning crews.
Gully Data Usage
This will allow the council to be proactive rather than reactive in their cleaning schedules.
When cleaning gully’s reactively the average team can clean between 5 to 10 gullies day. Proactively this can be increased to a massive 100 gullies a day. The reason for such a vast increase is dependant on the levels of silt.
Silt Levels & Cleaning Times
|Silt Levels||Time To Clean||Actions Required To Clean Gullies|
|25 – 50%||10 mins||silt cleaned mechanically|
|50 – 75%||25 mins||manual dig our required|
|75 – 85%||35 – 40 mins||further manual digging required|
|85% 100%||65 mins||cleaned by hand due to compact silt|
|100% 4 weeks||130+ mins||additional jetting required|
|100% 1 month +||140+ min||additional equipment needed to |
clean the main line
Greenwich has a population of around 31,000 people and its staggering that there is 20,00 gullies in the Borough. Of course Greenwich is famous for the measurement of time at Greenwich Mean Time.
Furthermore there is the Old Royal Naval College and the Cutty Sark. The Cutty Sark was famous for bringing tea back from China. The return trips could take over 3 months just to get the tea back to England.
