18 months on, what difference has it made?
Our SMART Benefits were introduced in September 2023, to support a healthier, more flexible approach to working. One of the most widely used policies has been Unlimited SMART Leave; giving team members the ability to take the time they need, when they need it, without fixed allowances.
18-months in, we’re speaking to people across the business to reflect on what’s changed — and where it’s made a difference.
We sat down with Reece Dixon, Technical Support Developer & Support Lead, to find out what difference it’s made to him.
Q: How have you used Unlimited SMART Leave over the last 12–18 months?
In lots of ways; from travelling to Norway to visit my partner’s family, to the more everyday stuff like suit fittings, emergency vet visits, and getting the car sorted. It’s been a massive help for family commitments and general life admin that doesn't always fit neatly into weekends.
Q: Has it changed how you manage your time or approach your workload?
Definitely. It’s made me more balanced in how I work. I still hit my deadlines, but if I finish something ahead of schedule, I can start my weekend a bit earlier or move things around if something crops up. It’s helped me stay calm, focused, and productive.
Q: How has it affected your work-life balance or overall wellbeing?
It’s had a big impact. Being able to travel to Norway and spend proper time there has been huge — not just for me, but for my partner too. It’s reduced stress and helped me feel more present. I’d say it’s improved my overall wellbeing by about 90%.
Q: What would you say to other employers thinking about unlimited leave?
Do it. People work better when they feel trusted and supported. And honestly, it’s something I talk about with friends and family a lot - most of them don’t have anything like this in their own jobs, and they’re always a bit envious.
“Providing employees with the freedom to shape their work-life balance in a way that benefits both them and the business is a game-changer. When people feel trusted and supported, they’re more productive, engaged, and motivated to deliver their best work.”
