Katie:
Using KaarbonTech has been a game changer for Walsall in terms of their maintenance strategy. My name's Katie Morton. I'm the Director for Place and Environment at Walsall Council. Go back a decade and the drainage maintenance was reactive. We were probably attending 30 percent of the asset over the course of a year and the cost of the service was huge. Roll forward to where we are now. We've refocused on effective long-term asset management and a risk-based approach.

Since the code of practice came into place in 2018, we're all driven by a risk-based approach and you can't do proper asset management unless you've got really robust asset data. And that's what the KaarbonTech Gully SMART solution gives us. And not only that, it enables us to do the risk modelling, to inform the decisions that we're making.

With the KaarbonTech system, we're able to actively track the silt levels on individual gully pots. And what that means is that we don't have to unnecessarily clean all of the assets across the borough.

My name's Richard and I'm the Highway Asset Manager for Walsall Council. So if we've got areas where we know there's a flooding hotspot, for instance, we can increase the frequency and reduce the risk of flooding. Having access to such a robust set of data allows us to determine funding needs and demonstrate robustly what we need in terms of annual budgets for our gully cleansing operations.

Katie:
I think the most valuable thing to us about working with KaarbonTech has been that really personal service. When we've had a problem that we need to solve, we can have a conversation with the team and explore together how the software can support us to solve our maintenance problems. They've really grown with us and been really tuned in to what our needs are as a local authority and a highway authority.
