Platform & Support Technician

Role Type: Permanent - Full Time / Salary: £26,000 - £30,000

Our Vision

We’re on a mission to help communities thrive

Our vision is to help communities thrive, providing our customers with innovative tools to drive future progress. Our people enable us to do that.

We're looking for a technically strong person to join our team as a Platform & Support Technician. This role sits at the intersection of engineering and customer delivery, and you'll need a genuine technical foundation to do it well. You'll work within a small, multidisciplinary team, getting into the detail of our systems to diagnose problems, support releases, and contribute to how we deliver for customers. Customer support is part of the job, but what we value most is your ability to understand and reason about technical systems and act on that understanding.

About KaarbonTech

KaarbonTech provides software that helps local authorities and contractors run their highways, drainage, and green-space operations more effectively. We focus on making data easy to capture, easy to understand, and easy to act on.

Now in our 13th year, we partner with around 40% of UK councils and support more than 70 clients nationwide. Our mission is simple: use data and geospatial intelligence to empower local authorities to make better decisions about maintenance, inspections, and long-term asset planning.

We’re a remote-first company with a close-knit team centred around our Bournemouth HQ. We look for people who bring curiosity, integrity, and genuine drive; people who want to grow, solve real-world problems, and shape technology that makes a tangible difference to communities across the UK.

Our Values

We’re guided by principles that shape everything from how we support customers to how we build our tech:

Authentic - We act with honesty and integrity, building trust through our insight and open approach.

Fearless - We are ambitious and confident in what we do, unafraid to challenge the status quo when we see a better way.

Informed - We use data and expertise to see what others might miss, delivering clear, reliable, and frictionless solutions.

Pioneering - We are forward thinkers who never settle for what already exists. We collaborate to inspire new ideas and drive innovation.

What You'll Do

Our tech team makes multiple changes daily to client systems; writing and modifying JavaScript and TypeScript code, adjusting configuration flags, and keeping things running smoothly.

As a core part of that team, you'll:

  • Spot recurring issues and propose concrete improvements, whether to processes, configuration, or code.

  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues across our web and mobile applications, using browser dev tools, logs, and direct system access.

  • Reproduce, investigate, and log bugs with precision using GitHub and related tooling.

  • Query databases (Postgres/PostGIS) and system logs to identify root causes and data issues.

  • Work directly with developers to track, reproduce, and verify fixes.

  • Respond to customer queries via phone, email, and our ticketing system, bringing technical clarity to every interaction.

What to Expect

We're looking for someone who can hit the ground running.

From day one, you'll be:

  • Exploring features across environments to build a solid understanding of how our platform behaves in real-world use.

  • Talking directly with customers to understand their queries and giving them confident, useful answers.

  • Producing detailed, high-quality bug reports that clearly articulate issues with sufficient context and precision for the engineering team to act on directly.

As you settle in, you'll take on more autonomy:

  • Independently handling complex support and technical change requests with strong system-level knowledge.

  • Querying databases and logs to investigate data quality and system behaviour.

  • Contributing to internal tooling, automation, or process improvements.

The goal is a team where everyone has real technical depth and can cover for each other when needed.

As you grow in the role, there's scope to specialise in areas such as database and log analysis, system configuration, automated testing, or client-facing technical work.

We'll give you a clear development pathway and regular check-ins

Tools & Technologies

You won't be expected to know everything from day one, but you should be comfortable at the command line, able to read code, and willing to pick up new tools quickly.

You'll be working hands-on with:

  • Linux command line & remote SSH for navigating servers, reading logs, and executing scripts

  • PostgreSQL / PostGIS for querying databases to investigate issues and data quality

  • Git & GitHub for version control and issue tracking

  • JavaScript / TypeScript for reading and understanding application code

  • QGIS & Excel for spatial and tabular data analysis

Who We're Looking For

You have a technical background, whether through formal study or hands-on experience, and you're genuinely at ease working with code, databases, and systems. You communicate clearly, keep a level head under pressure, and see problems through to a proper resolution.

Essential

  • Practical experience with SQL, Linux/command line, or one or more programming languages.

  • Ability to read and reason about application code (JavaScript/TypeScript experience is a strong advantage).

  • A methodical approach to diagnosing and reproducing issues.

  • Clear written and verbal communication; you can explain technical problems to developers and non-technical customers alike.

  • Self-sufficient and proactive: you investigate before escalating.

  • Analytical mindset and able to efficiently utilise tools to your advantage.

Beneficial

  • Familiarity with Git and issue-tracking workflows.

  • Background in a technical support, QA automation, or junior development role.

  • Exposure to geospatial tools or data (ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS).
