Useful Tree Planting Aftercare

Planting a new tree is an investment in the future of the environment with numerous benefits including the support of biodiversity. However, it is important to provide proper aftercare for the newly planted tree to ensure its establishment, survival and growth. Here are some essential steps to follow:

  1. Watering: Proper watering is crucial for the health and growth of your new tree. Water the tree immediately after planting and maintain consistent soil moisture throughout the first year. Sensors are useful to gauge moisture levels, and open-source rainfall data provides a guide to the required frequency. Water deeply and infrequently rather than shallowly and frequently. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Monitor soil moisture regularly and adjust watering as needed. Consider using a drip irrigation system for consistent watering.

  1. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or shredded bark, around the base of the tree. Leave a small gap around the trunk to prevent rot. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulates soil temperature. Aim for a layer of mulch that is 2-4 inches deep.

  1. Pruning: Wait until the tree is established, typically after the first year, before pruning. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Prune to maintain the desired shape and size of the tree. Use sharp, clean pruning secateurs and make clean cuts. Avoid pruning during periods of active growth or extreme weather conditions.

  1. Fertilising: Wait until the tree is established before considering fertilising. Use a soil testing kit and pH meter to determine nutrient needs. Apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser according to the manufacturer's instructions. Consider using mycorrhizal fungi to increase nutrient uptake.
